NX-Engine is an early open-source recreation of Cave Story’s engine by Caitlin Shaw released in 2010. It was later picked up and further developed by isage into nxengine-evo, an improved version.
NX-Engine was one of the first open-sourced Cave Story engines available, and as such, is the backbone of many older ports of the game, such as:
At least one network port | (github source) |
As far as backend operation is concerned, the NX-Engine shares little similarity with the vanilla game. One notable example of this difference is its complete disregard for NPC tilesets, making even simple map editing with the engine difficult. These backend problems have made other engines much more popular for creating mods.
For modding the source engine, it is recommended to use CSE2 or d-rs instead.
